Adventure Learning

Experience is always the best teacher. We learn best by having fun, and engaging our entire mind, body and spirit in the process of education. Whether 3 years of age or 93, a trip to the beach can inspire us, fill us with wonder and bring us to a new understanding of ourselves and the world.

Since its dedication in 1994 Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary has focused on adventure learning programs as an important way to serve Sanctuary visitors and learners of all ages. Whether you have an hour or a weekend, programs offered with our partners the Makah Tribe, Olympic National Park and Olympic Park Institute can connect you to the Olympic Coast physically and mentally.

Beach WalkRegular beach walks and evening programs are offered through Olympic National Park at Kalaloch and Mora campgrounds.

Visitor Center at Makah MarinaJoin a Makah Interpreter for a hike to Cape Flattery, visit the Olympic Coast Visitor Center at the Makah Marina or the Makah Museum, to learn more about Makah Culture and the marine environment of the Olympic Coast.

Sign up for an Olympic Coast Learning Adventure course through Olympic Park Institute. These expert-led classes for 10 to 20 participants often start at OPI's Lake Crescent campus and end up on the coast.

Coast Quest hikeOlympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary occasionally teams up with other partners for Coast Quest courses. These courses for selected young people emphasize basic outdoor skills including seamanship or backpacking and add a strong mix of ocean science and marine biology. Offerings are extremely limited.
